Since
1986, the mission of the Shaking Ray Levi Society (SRLS), a
501(c)(3) non-profit arts education organization, has been to
support original work by area artists, engage the community
through outreach programs, and present artists recognized on a
national and international level.
The SRLS
strives to nurture creativity throughout the area in schools,
hospitals and other facilities with a partnership with The
Rhythmic Arts Project (TRAP), which allows the SRLS to
reach those with various disabilities using percussion as a
tool; this outreach concentrates on underserved populations
(including children with cognitive, physical and emotional
disabilities) at facilities including Signal
Centers, Dawn School,
Borderless Arts (VSA
Tennessee), Hospice of Chattanooga's Grief Camp, Chattanooga
Therapeutic Recreation Services and the Chattanooga Zoo's Camp
ZooAbility.
The SRLS presents arts and culture in a diverse way that spans
music, film, dance, visual and performance art, history,
education and more. It was responsible for the planning,
project management and implementation of the year-long Southside
installation Wayne-O-Rama
in 2016-2017, a local history funhouse designed by 4-time Emmy
winning artist Wayne White.
